Join Pedro Ramirez on Friday afternoons to make LIVING POTS!

Learn an alternative way of putting your pottery skills to use, make a planter where the plants grow on the surface! Pedro has been making living pots since 2013 and will guide participants through the process of design and execution of their own pottery to be planted during the course. Recipes for substrate mixes using sand, soil and clay will be provided as well as Pedro’s moss milkshake recipe. Students will be throwing pots on the pottery wheel, so previous wheel experience is required, your experience will determine how large of a living pot you will be able to create. Seeds are provided and included in the course. Below is the 8-week plan.

3. Throw & Add spikes and other parts, texture.

4. Trim & Fire 1st pot.

5. Bisque 2nd pot. Glazing 1st pot.

6. Luster and overglazes (3rd firing), Glaze 2nd pot.

7. Seed planting.

8. Sprouted pots reflection and cutting adoption.

Is a Chia pet and a self-watering Terra Cotta Planter or Terra planter all the same type of thing? YES and you have the power to make one. Terraplanter is a product that grows plants on the surface without soil, some people call this technology a self-irrigated hydroponic planter, a water thru planter, or a planter in which the wall irrigates the plants.

Current students must have their own clay, we will send notification when it is time to purchase for the upcoming session. Your clay will be at the studio on your first day of class. All clays except sculpture and terra cotta are appropriate for wheel work.

Each student will get up to two 2.5 hour time slots of open studio each week.
