Hello students and members.

Pedro used to teach at Greenwich House Pottery on Monday nights and they have moved to online teaching. This means that Monday nights will now be a basic wheel class. We will still do handbuilding on Wednesday and Friday nights.

Feel free to keep joining, there will be Greenwich House folks there and it will be demo heavy but all are welcome.

Mondays 7-8pm Schedule:

4/13 - Mini Wheel
4/20 - Basic Cylinder/Throwing
4/27 - Trimming & Handles
5/4 - Stencil and Sgraffito
5/11 - Bowl
5/18 - Trim & Vase (shaping)
5/25 - Plate
6/1 - Lid & Trim

Printing or painting on plaster

We noticed a lot of members have taken up watercolor and acrylic painting during the crisis and thought this might be fun when people return to the studio. In this video posted by Greenwich House Pottery by our own Pedro Ramirez, you can learn how to print or paint on plaster to transfer your drawings onto a slab.

Monday 4/13 Zoom Week 4 of digital learning

Hello, Monday’s Zoom sesh will be about throwing on the miniature pottery wheel.

You can buy your own on amazon or ebay but some don’t turn clockwise/counterclockwise so be sure to check. HERE is an example of one on amazon but we are not endorsing nor have we actually used that wheel.

Below is a little video compilation of some instagram videos showing miniature throwing in time lapse and also pointing out some of the differences between miniature and full size throwing.

Digital Learning week 3 4/6-4/12

Hello Mousers!

Can you believe we are in week three of digital learning!?!?! YIKES.

Heres our plan for this week:

Monday 4/6

On Monday we want to talk about recycling your clay at home. Lots of you are starting to take the plunge and jump right in to understanding clay on a deep level which means recycling your own materials. One way to do this without plaster is to use an old shirt, sheet, or pillowcase and just leave the slip in there outside or in an open window. As the cloth wicks the moisture off, the clay becomes more and more able to be wedged up and used again.

Second video for Monday is a fun pinch pot video where the pinch vessels look more like slab pots than pinch pots. Pretty exciting for those out there that are new to handbuilding.

Wednesday 4/8

Wednesday we want to inspire you by showing this silent video by Jeff Pabotoy. This video is not instructive with words but you can see that the coils are joined two at a time or so and a form is used to keep the pot on shape. The banding wheel is also used extensively. If you want to buy amazing Shimpo banding wheels, check out this link: https://www.theceramicshop.com/product/2425/banding-wheel-shimpo-22l/
Here is a link to the type we have in the studio CLICK HERE

Friday 4/10

This ones for Yulia. How to make plaster molds for handbuilding can also be utilized to make plaster for your at home clay recycling if you decide the method discussed on Monday isn’t for you.

Digital Learning week 1 3/23-3/29

Hey everybody!

Week one of online learning and discussion is here. We are having Zoom sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Monday, Wednesday sessions begin at 7pm and Friday sessions begin at 8pm. Friday sessions are cocktail/BYOB so feel free to bring a beverage.

Each week we will be posting three videos, these are our favorite youtube how to (generally handbuilding), or decorating videos that we hope you will try. Those who try it out can show us during the group discussion on Zoom, and others can simply talk about it and any questions they may have about the process.

We are sending out emails asking those who want to be included on the zoom email list to let us know and we will send you all the link when we are live. Download zoom ahead of time https://zoom.us
