Sunday Sampler - Handbuilding - Sept 29th, Oct 6th, 13th, 20th - 130-3pm
Join Signe on Sundays for a 4 week tour of hand-building techniques. In this series you'll learn both the basics as well as some more advanced techniques. Each participant will complete four projects which include pinching, coiling, slab work and colored slip casting. Students will finish with glazing the last week.
Week one- Often seen as simple and straightforward the pinching technique is often used by advanced ceramicists to create more complex forms. For the pinching technique participants will make a lidded box. Also in week one you'll learn how to use colored liquid clay also known as slip to cast a form in a plaster mold. This is a two part process which will be finished in week two.
Week two- Participants will use the coiling technique to form a vessel, could be a vase, a bowl, a cup, etc.
Week three - For the final technique participants will use slabs and an armature to create a cylindrical vessel, with or without a handle.
Week four - Glazing. In the final week you will glaze all of your work using either the dip or brushing method.
The photos illustrate the various techniques you'll be learning.
